Natural Toothpaste

There are quite a few brands of natural toothpaste on the market. There's also a lot of recipes that you can make at home. The debate is what you would consider natural. The other dilemma is whether or not fluoride and glycerin, two very common ingredients found in toothpaste, does more harm than good. No matter where you look for information on this topic everyone seems to have an opinion.

Tonight I decided to make my own toothpaste. Since I had all the ingredients in my pantry you could easily call it "Natural". It contains four ingredients and took less than 3 minutes to prepare.
The ingredients are Baking Soda, Coconut oil, Stevia and Peppermint oil. That's it.
  1. Coconut oil: 3 Tablespoons
  2. Baking Soda: 4 Tablespoons
  3. Peppermint Oil: 20-25 drops
  4. Stevia: 3 to 6 packets (I used 6)

Mix until blended and store in a container with a closed lid. You could also substitute the peppermint oil with Cinnamon oil, but I recommend adding a few drops at a time until you get the right flavor - it's strong.

Coconut oil...sigh!! I guess you can say I'm hooked on this stuff. Coconut oil has natural anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. A lot of natural homemade recipes seem to contain either coconut oil or glycerin. Since glycerin is becoming controversial, I decided to play it safe.

I will be testing this toothpaste out during the next few weeks. I did have to try it out tonight to see what it was like. It has the consistency of white toothpaste. More later!

All the best,
Marnie

Interesting idea. I've been using baking soda alot before I brush with a regular toothpaste. It makes my teeth feel cleaner & look whiter. Never thought to make my own toothpaste though. :)

what is stevia?

Hi Widge,
Sorry I didn't see this until now.
Stevia is really amazing. It's a plant that hails from the rainforests of Paraguay. It's up to 300 times sweeter than sugar, does not affect blood sugar levels, and has no calories. It is nutritious, noncarcenogenic, nontoxic, and safe for diabetics and hypoglycemics.

I used it in my toothpaste to cut down on the baking soda flavor. It's also good in beverages. They used to use in in Diet Coke over in Japan, until Coke decided to make their formula universal with Asparatme.

You can purchase it in bulk powder, liquid, or in packets. I like the packets as it's pre-measured.
