The first time I became aware of these Child Beauty Pageants was back when JonBenet Ramsey's unfortunate death made headlines. I never knew they existed. Back then the girls looked too grown up for my liking.
Is it my imagination, or have things changed since then? I was watching an episode of Toddlers & Tiaras and was surprised to learn that the mothers often purchase fake teeth and wigs for their daughters on top of all the make-up and costumes. Fake teeth! A wig! Why can't a girl look like a girl? Why not normal dresses that are age appropriate and real hair?
What kind of a message does this give these poor girls who are competing and those who watch this show? I would be interested in talking to the parents who enter their daughters in these competitions!
I can see a whole slew of image problems stemming from shows like this. What are your views? I'm curious.
All the best,
